Three Refugee Stories, One Special Evening
It’s hard to pick out just one highlight from our Gathering for Good two weeks ago—the event space, food and drinks, and surprise birthday cake generously donated by Mozart’s Cafe were lovely, the social company was wonderful, and the unity and support for those we serve was unmistakable.
Near the end of the evening, though, there was a very special moment. Three individuals briefly shared their stories of being resettled by and involved with CRIS in the last two years. Their words were heartfelt and moving. Here are snapshots of what they shared…
Niane was resettled by CRIS in the spring of 2023. Like anyone who is resettled alone, Niane has faced many challenges over the last two years but continues to overcome them. In addition to our resettlement program, Niane has participated in wellness groups through our Refugee Health & Wellness program and received support from our Employment program team. We are inspired by Niane’s resilience and joy, and celebrate the good news of a recent job promotion. Niane shared at the Gathering for Good, “I am so thankful to CRIS and everyone who has supported me here in Columbus. I’m very happy with you since I came to America. I’m experiencing everything you’ve done for me. God bless you all. Thank you.”
Father-daughter duo Hazaa and Diana and the rest of their family of six were resettled by CRIS in the fall of 2023. Diana works full-time at a retail store. In her spare time, she has been involved in CRIS’ Refugee Health & Wellness sewing groups, a natural outlet for her passion for fashion. This Saturday, she will participate in her second Cultural & Artisan Fair selling handmade bags and accessories. She shared at the Gathering for Good, “I have been here for a year and a half. Today, I am much better than before thanks to your support and efforts…today I feel safe and realize my dreams with your help. I do not forget that you believe in my talent; you’ve given me everything I need.”
Hazaa is a father to four adult children (including Diana). Since his resettlement, Hazaa has been a faithful participant in CRIS’ in-office English classes and has been involved with the CRIS Senior Services program. Of his own accord, Hazaa also regularly brings donations to the CRIS office to give to others. At the Gathering for Good, Hazaa shared, “I came to the United States a year and a half ago. I was a refugee in Lebanon since 2014 because of the war…we thank CRIS who wiped our tears and welcomed us with flowers at the Columbus airport. They took us to a home and helped us with rental support in our first three months. Our language skills were zero, our finances were zero, and we did not know very much about American culture when we came. They helped us get medical appointments, vaccinations, food and financial assistance. They taught us the language and culture, helped us get driver’s licenses. I will not forget the volunteers who made my family feel so welcome.”
