Columbus Dispatch highlights CRIS’ Seniors

The Columbus Dispatch on February 15, 2016 featured seniors from the refugee community in Columbus and their struggles to adjust to their new life in Columbus.

The stress of settling into a new culture can lead older adults to develop anxiety, depression or other mental-health issues, said Eyassu Yeshak, a senior services caseworker at CRIS.

Losing established roots, relationships and a familiar way of life in their home countries, where old age is often equated with wisdom and privilege, doesn’t help, said Angela Plummer, CRIS’s executive director.

“They’ve already lost so much, which is why we should do more to embrace them,” she said.
